Shop with a Cop! 2013
Shop with a Cop! 2013 was held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Happy Valley Wal-Mart, located at 10000 SE 82nd Avenue. 133 kids from 10 Clackamas County School Districts shopped with one of 51 uniformed police officers from eight Clackamas County Police agencies. 41 volunteers from all of the police agencies, school districts and other organizations, including sponsors and others, helped make this one of our most successful Shop with a Cop! events ever. The Shop with a Cop! is organized by the CCPOBF and is geared towards the Holiday season. It has several benefits to all the people involved. Kids are selected by the school district counselors and staff and by any School Resource Officers that may be working in the school. Kids must be from needy families and have had some contact with police, such as a parent or sibling arrested or in trouble. Often these kids develop a distrust of the police, mostly from listening to those who were in trouble. The kids who are selected are paired up with a uniformed police officer on the day of the event. They are given a $100 gift card and shop with their police partner. Parents are not allowed to accompany the kids, as this is a one-on-one time for the child and the officer. The kids learn that the cop is just a person doing a very difficult job and is just like any other parent. The cops learn that not all kids are as bad as their job sometimes leads them to believe. It is a win for both! It is impossible to tell who is smiling more after the event – the child or the officer! The parents also get to talk with police officers and see how their kids interact with them. They, too, seem to change some of their attitudes towards police. Fundraising for the event is year round. This year the donors/sponsors are Wal-Mart, General Mills, the North Clackamas Chamber of Commerce, the Bridgetown Campers, Clackamas County Employees – “A-Team”, Molalla Communications, and J&M Homes. Police officers attending came from the following police agencies: Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Molalla PD, Canby PD, Sandy PD, Milwaukie PD, Lake Oswego PD, West Linn PD, and Oregon State Police. Kids came from the following school districts: Wilsonville, West Linn, Lake Oswego, Canby, Molalla, Colton, Estacada, Sandy, and North Clackamas School District. Volunteers of note: Ambassadors of the North Clackamas Chamber of Commerce and employees of Wal-Mart. Many family, friends and non-sworn co-workers of the police officers also helped out.
